It's Hot. It's Ready! It's Pizza!
This weekend the Bear Den learned about food safety and preparation. From cleanliness to cross-contamination to proper tool care, the scouts covered quite a bit of ground. Using their new knife skills, the scouts were able to slice, dice and prepare both a salad and pizza toppings. They also kneaded dough, learned about cooking bread items on a hot grill and how to time food.
The first requirement was for the den to decide what healthy dish to cook and then for each scout to sign up for an ingredient. The scout needed to budget and shop for their selected items.
The adults prepared the grills.
Stations were set up to allow each scout a chance at the various tasks: dough preparation, cutting vegetables, and salad prep.
Instructions meant that each scout needed to focus or risk messing up their pizza. Fortunately everyone was on task and made an edible dinner!
Food safety instruction included a basic Q and A. It was surprising how much third graders were able to connect from their own life in the kitchen, at the school cafeteria or at restaurants.
The outcome was worth the effort! A variety of toppings insured that everyone could find healthy choices which suited their tastes.
Ok we admit that the pepperoni wasn't exactly healthy. But it was so delicious!
As always at Pack 285, the siblings were welcome to try their hands at the activity. We love to see both older and younger siblings at these events. It makes Pack 285 unique - we truly believe that cub scouting is for the whole family.
Great job, Bears! You know how to make this blogger hungry!
