Rally Night - Pack 285 Annual Recruitment Kick Off

JOIN US TONIGHT!

Pack 285 is kicking off recruitment for the year with a Rally Night event.  Join us at Amana Academy at 6PM to meet the den leaders and other scouting families, learn more about your den's meeting schedule, hear about this year's big activities, and complete the application and fee payment process.

Tonight we will be distributing Raingutter Regatta kits to all scouts making a full or partial dues payment (dues can be paid in two installments).  Take your kit home and build your fun watercraft.  It's as easy as that and no tools are required.  Decorate it to reflect your personal tastes.

The Regatta will be held the Second Tuesday of September!

Touch a Truck Kickoff Event

Getting the Morning Started with a Hike

A few isolated morning showers peppered the Roswell/Alpharetta corridor this morning and delayed many scouting families from the 9:30AM meet-up and hike.  Pack 285 was pleasantly surprised however to be joined briefly by Amana Academy's Executive Director, Ehab Jaleel. It's always a pleasure to have Amana Academy leadership surprise us with a quick visit.  GO EAGLES!

While the group started off small, late arriving families were able to catch up
to us at the main event: Touch A Truck!

If you are new to the City of Alpharetta's Touch a Truck, then here's a quick photo primer:

Every imaginable fire/police/rescue vehicle from bicycle patrol to armored SWAT to disaster response vehicles are available for children of all ages to explore.  Staff are onsite to educate interested viewers in the finer details of these very expensive and very special vehicles.

Arriving early offers a special highlight: the landing of the Medivac helicopter.  The helicopter really does stir up the sand on the ball field and blow your hair just like on television.  Those of us wearing glasses fared a lot better than those without!  Because the life flight unit can - and has - been called into service midway through the event, we are always careful to get in the tour as soon as it arrives.  In the first image below, the helicopter has just arrived and our scouts are already in line!

Because a child once turned the motor on - but not the rotors - visitors are no longer able to sit inside the helicopter.  This at least was the story told to our scouts be their guide!  It never fails to impress our scouts as they see just how tight a spot the paramedics are working in while under flight.

Just about any other vehicle you could imagine is to be found at Touch a Truck: cement mixers, cranes (sporting tire swings!), limos, the MegaBus, row boats, antique cars and trucks, motorcycles, a TANK, the Furbus, 18 wheelers, the Game Truck, and oh so much more!

This year one of the most popular trucks (and there were several very sought after vehicles) was the semi from Coke. Inside the famous red trailer were coolers stocked with ice cold juices!!  To access these delicious COLD drinks, however, visitors needed to ride on the automated ramp.  Squeezing everyone safely on and having parents available to hold little hands was a big help.

The ramp then slowly went up and up!  To leave the truck everyone needed to go back to the ramp and as a unit make the slow decent downward.  While incredibly popular it was also ironic that the Coke truck had no bottled water for it's own driver/operator.  Never fear! PACK 285 IS HERE!  Like the good scouts that we are...our boys offered the operator ice cold water from the cooler which we wisely wheeled around with our group.  Scouts are helpful. Scouts are prepared.

There were some really fun novelty vehicles as well.  The hot dog food cart shaped like a hot dog? Check. The roller skate four wheeler? Check.  Plus a host of other food trucks which we took the liberty of visiting more than once.

If you asked the scouts what their favorite was today, there would have been a tie between the game truck, the tank, the Coke truck and the Megabus.  The adults, however, all agreed that the best vehicles were the air conditioned ones that we drove home after a very hot, very noisy, very fun time.

Club Expo 2015 was a Success!

Many New Families Show an Interest in Pack 285

Thank you to both Jason Blalock, Cub Master, and Roger Boyd, Bear Den Leader, for coming out on Friday afternoon to staff the Pack 285 booth at the Amana Academy 2015 Club Expo!

Placing our booth next to the very popular Chess Club was a stroke of genius and interested the number of families we were able to speak with about cub scouting.  All total fourteen new families signed an interest form and will be contacted next week by our leadership team.

It's not too late to express interest!

This coming Friday, 8/28 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM is Rally Night! Join us at Amana Academy to meet our den leaders as well as other cub scouting families. The boys will have a chance to work on several projects while the adults discuss den meeting schedules, complete paperwork, and accept fee payments. Returning scouts as well as new scouts are invited. Also remember that Pack 285 accepts scouts from other schools in Fulton County so feel free to invite neighbors or other non-Amana friends.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday!

Pack Meeting Themes Announced!

Wondering What All the Excitement is About?

Pack 285 is gearing up for a third great year of service and community!

Won't you join us at our monthly Pack Potlucks to celebrate the fun and excitement of scouting? As in years past, we will circulate a Signup Genius for the potluck. Each family is asked to select one or more items to bring to the dinner.  Remember that siblings and relatives visiting from out of town are encouraged to join us.

This year the themes for the Pack Potlucks include:

September = Raingutter Regatta:  Our annual scout and sibling boat race in the inflatable track!

October = Spooky Ree!  In place of a monthly pack potluck, we encourage families to join us on a two night camp out at Bert Adams Scout Reservation in Covington, GA.

November = Service Projects!  Come assist us in completing a Fall service project and learn more about service projects coming up in the Spring.

December = Games Galore: Celebrate the midpoint of the year with a series of fun family games.

January = Snowballs and Such: Our third year of snow related fun!

February = Blue and Gold Banquet and Family Talent Show! Who can forget the amazing cakes from last year or the terrifically talents scouts, siblings and parents who participated in our first ever "Do Your Best" Talent Show ?!

March = Pinewood Derby Car Race and Scouting for Food (Food Pantry Service Project)!  Two classic scouting activities make for a terrific fun filled day!

April =  K-9s and Camping!  Another perennial favorite as we checked with the Alpharetta Police Department and their K-9 unit.  In addition we prepare for our two night camp out at General Coffee State Park in southern Georgia.

May = Picnic and Advancement Ceremony!  This is an exciting year as we guide our Webelos 2 den out of Cub Scouting and into Boy Scouting.  These Webelos were among the first young men to join Pack 285 and we are excited to watch them transition into Boy Scouts.  In addition we will be recognizing the achievements of all our scouts as they move into their next den level.  June starts a brand new scouting year!

Welcome Back to School!

Time to get Scouting!

School has started for most counties in North Metro Atlanta and with this comes the start of a new scouting year.  Pack 285 is excited to welcome its current scouts back to Mountain Park Elementary, Crabapple Crossings and Amana Academy.  We look forward to meeting many new families as the recruitment period gets underway.

Visit us on Friday, August 21st at 1:00PM during the Club Expo in the cafeteria at Amana Academy for more information about membership, costs and activities.

Then meet up with us for the annual City of Alpharetta Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday, August 22nd! Pack 285 will gather in the front parking lot of Amana Academy at 9:30AM and walk over to this fun family event. Remember Touch-a-Truck is an optional event.  It's just a casual entertaining way for new and returning families to meet one another. Vehicles are available to "touch" from 10:00AM to 2:00PM in the area behind the city pool at Wills Park. Because of the soaring temperatures, we strongly encourage families to bring water bottles and dress for the heat. Also feel free to bring some cash if you are interested in purchasing a cold beverage or an ice pop from one of the vendors onsite.

Finally on Friday, August 28th at 6:00PM, Pack 285 will host Rally Night 2015.  This event allows interested boys and returning scouts to mingle with Boy Scouts from neighboring troops as they explore what scouting means through fun games and activities. Parents in attendance will have their questions answered about scouting and den leaders will be on-hand to establish meeting times and dates. Scouts submitting a completed application on Rally Night will automatically receive a free Raingutter Regatta kit as well as a Pinewood Derby car kit for use this year.
